Life in Finland and Turku
Finland is a nice Nordic society that’s generally functional and reliable and comes with a lot of clean nature and a shared fondness for dark humour. This is maybe why Finland has been ranked the Happiest Country in the world by U.N. for the 6th time in a row! They also say Finland is the promised land of introverts, which we animation professionals love, right?
Turku is a medium-sized city located on the South-Western coast of Finland. It’s actually the oldest city in Finland, with a history dating back far into the Middle Ages, but it’s also home to a handful of universities, giving it a youthful and international buzz - if it's social life you're looking for, after all.
For us, Turku is great because it’s cozy and active, but the cost of living is significantly lower than in Helsinki or other bigger European cities. It has a lot of culture (both mainstream and alternative) and great restaurants, and as usual in Finland, there’s plenty of nature everywhere - the city is right by the beautiful Aura river and close to the Baltic sea and its unique archipelago.
We also love that Turku is both compact and well-connected: within the city, you can get anywhere within 20 minutes on foot, bicycle or public transport, so you won’t have to spend much of your time commuting. Helsinki and Tampere, the two other larger cities in Southern Finland, are only a 2-hour train ride away, and Stockholm can be reached on an overnight ferry.
